Peoria Academy hosts the Midwest Chess Camp in early August. This is our 20th year. Our goal is to provide high quality instruction to beginner and advanced players alike, with a competition to allow players to learn and then try out what they have learned with participation in a nationally ratedchess tournament. We accept players from kindergarten to high school. The only prerequisite for camp is just a knowledge of how the pieces move.
Our goal is to prepare young players with the skills they need for strong competition and to allow club players from the central Illinois area to mix and compete with Masters and other strong players. Players are divided into 2 Sections based on skill, beginner/novice and intermediate/advanced. After two days of instruction, players get a chance to show what they have learned with a tournament on Saturday August 2nd. Additional local K-12 players are invited to join for the tournament. Instruction is lead by Illinois Chess Coach of the Year, Murrel Rhodes, and profesional educator and GPCF Tournament Director, Patrick Cohen.
